Richard Murden Reserve (Hawthorne Canal)

Overview
Located in Sydney’s Inner West, Richard Murden Reserve in Haberfield provides a large off-leash space that stretches along the Hawthorne Canal.
The park is unfenced but expansive, offering open grassy fields, shaded areas, and direct access to the water. Its scale and natural setting make it one of the most popular off-leash destinations in the Inner West.
The off-leash area runs alongside the canal, with plenty of space for dogs to run, chase, and socialise. Shady trees, benches, and walking paths make it comfortable for owners, and water access provides adventurous dogs with the chance to cool off. The long, linear layout also makes it ideal for extended play and exercise.
Because the space is unfenced and runs alongside the canal and nearby roads, strong recall is important. The grass is generally well maintained but can become muddy after rain, especially near the water. Bringing your own water bowl is recommended.
The reserve connects directly to the Bay Run and other foreshore walking routes, offering longer outings for both dogs and owners. Leichhardt and Haberfield cafés are nearby, adding convenience for post-walk stops.
Richard Murden Reserve is best suited to energetic, social dogs that enjoy long runs, water access, and busy, community settings.
Richard Murden Reserve is managed by the Inner West Council.
